a few words by steffen bennemann: i was in loose contact with aggelos (dream weapons) for a few years, watching him from a distant with great interest. in 2012, he sent me his debut lp on inner ear under his fantastikoi hxoi moniker and it quickly became my favourite album of the year. when i told him our plans for holger he sent me some of his more electronic leaning music. i was instantly captured by the driving, trippy kraut techno songs which show homage to the psychedelic sounds of the 60s and 70s while holding their own in the here and now. exactly our cup of tea.

r&s sister label apollo are very proud to announce a four-track ep from james leyland kirby. mastermind behind arch sonic provocateurs v/vm as well as the more contemplative the caretaker and the stranger, kirby has been responsible for some of the most unique, subversive and moving electronic music of the past two decades. following a quiet 2012 and 2013, the ep marks both his apollo debut and his first release since 2011 under the leyland kirby alias - an outlet for his most personal and reflective work.

nicholas iammatteo, better known as simply nicholas to most has racked up an impressive backcatalogue since stepping onto the scene in 2011, racking up material on some of the industries leading imprints such as quintessentials, 4lux, home taping is killing music and needwant.

lphs second record of the year is quite a doozy. once again, label co- founder/owner, jacques renault, steps up to the plate, equipped with some tnt laced with his special sauce.

limited edition, hand stamped inclduing a unique print. time to welcome kresy to the label with three original tracks of immaculate left of centre house. with only a clutch of releases his name may be new to many but if you dig deeper youll find hes definitely moving the right circles. his debut release on john talabot’s hivern discs gave some broad exposure, picking up spins from the likes of four tets keiren hebden, jenifer cardini and nick hoppner. remix requests followed too with releases on exquisite pain, southern fried and lovemonk all getting the kresy treatment.

apparel music pushes forward with a four track single from label-founder kisk. the italian producer teams up with some associates of the imprint on a couple of the featured cuts, while anton kubikov reworks the title track to shape up the *friends* ep.

after a decent hiatus a.r.t.less finally returns for some serious techno action

following their acclaimed debut album, migration, on prins thomas internasjonal label in 2012, jamie paton and nigel hoyle (aka nigel of bermondsey) have seemed relatively quiet save for the odd remix here and there. tucked away deep in their south east london base though, a series of remixes and solo projects have been steadily forming. with new c&a material planned for 2014, plus more to come from jamies new solo efforts, as well as nigel making a long overdue reappearance in maurice & charles, now seems the right time to draw a line under their collective work to date. here then are a collection of unreleased interpretatons, including the sought after vocal remix of psychedlic darlings, in goats anthemic run to your mama. this is followed by a late night dub of 80s pop duo blancmange that mixes strings, guitar and some dub bass with a dose of space echo before bringing neil arthur s classicly recognisable refrain shining through. to finish is a remix of goats label mates teeth of the sea. fx-soundtrack vocal, bubbling 303 and 808 combine on a proper 3am dub that builds beyond some mere drug-chug.

this return of ferox records sees an enthusiastic response from all. the label has forthcoming releases from many original ferox artists and some new recruits and collaborations along the way. this, the first release in 5 years, sees label head-honcho russ gabriel in action under his too funk guise. from the first return of too funk ep to the later hotel ibis and derrick carters remix of venus fly trap, russs too funk grooves have been jacking dance floors on both sides of the atlantic since 1995.

from the tropics comes whiskey disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. it is loosely connected to sleazy mcqueen and his assorted cohorts.
whiskey disco #25: it started in 2009 when a friend rang sleazy mcqueen and asked to *press some of those edits he has been making* and has now reached its 25th vinyl release. time flies when you are having fun - and fun has always been the cornerstone of whiskey disco. back to the roots ep exemplifies the label mission and the disco hippies who cherish it. loops filtered, space rocked and jam band, whiskey disco has made a mark on the edit scene that few can dispute and we have only just begun.

pascal blanché, wojtek kutschke and vocalist lukas polocze – better known as chasing kurt –originally released this track on their album of the same name. now * from the inside* has been given the remix treatment by some of worlds most respected house producers. first up is legendary german artist henrik schwarz, who has a knack for making every one of his productions as exciting as the next. his rendition of * from the inside* is no anomaly as he demonstrates his sublime approach to music making by using analogue bass stabs and violin bowing before floating atmospheric synths emerge to take centre stage. konstantin sibolds mix is a completely different beast altogether, using denser kick drums and haunting claps as the bed for reverberating vocals and a bouncy hook

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.

gerome sportelli presents sporty limited, a new record label managed by himself as a limited vinyl series. after big success with his krax records in 2004, veteran gerome sportelli is back with a new label project. the genre of the label swings between dance floor oriented house and techno, with a touch of acid and of course some dusty old school flavours. gerome’s already active in the music industry since the early 90’s as a producer, dj, label manager, party promoter and graphic designer. his music ‘smells’ old school, just like the early age of acid house, but infused with today’s intelligent constructions and an engaged vision on music. gerome’s music is made from bronze age analogue synths, love, passion and modern digital mixing techniques.for this first sporty limited release, gerome comes out with three stylish tracks. the first track, a side “drive”, is a fat house stomper with strong stabs and female voice hits. the break is intense and works effectively on packed dance floors. b1 is called “free range” and feels like summer. it’s full of classic house sounds, filtered strings and hypnotic loops. this is a chicago­styled, disco sampled, deep and classy house track we love and cherish. the b2 track, “don’t go”, is composed with a classic house bass, shuffled 909 drums and dark space strings. you’ll immediately recognize the deep and melodic detroit house sound.

straight out of st petersburg comes a brand new drum & bass label from russia with a lot of love. an offshoot of already established audio plants recordings, burelom (pronounced boorelom) is the russian word describing rugged outdoor terrain, windswept landscapes and fallen trees. this image sets a precedent for the music to follow, expect some of the most breathtaking d&b from deep, dark sonics through to ethereal vocal-led dance floor infusions, starting with release number 1 due january 2014.

trackwork ep.no.2 is headed up by a super swingy acid tinged wigout multiculture - simple but deadly on the floor. next we have the stone-age-cave-rave of a billion years ago - a clash of de-tuned vox and live dub delay edits and to round side a off - feel it warps and mangles a classic paradise garage disco sample into some dark heads-down tracky gear.

the fourth instalment of local talks series crosses all genres of house and have been delivered by producers from sweden, argentina, germany and finland. its a wide and complete mix of deep and thumping 4/4s. the opening track from combo loops a killer stevie sample over some mid-tempo electronic house beats…its pure shuga! tim vita, oliver gehrmann and xavier hirsch does a similar thing using a big voiced motown legend together with dark but jazzy house rhythms. < finnish house legend sasse (mood music) delivers a classic deep but electronic jam that definitely sets a deep mode. we finish off with a classic us garage track from argentinian producer tom noir, a real club filler with some serious breakdowns.

teng returns with the *grand statement* ep by veteran techno producer, paul mac, backed with a rework from paul under his jorge zamacona, guise. teng records takes the step from fledgling imprint to fully-fledged label here, after marking a milestone with a full length for its tenth release. since launching the label has found affirmation in its intentions by picking up support from some key underground artists in the industry, such as christopher rau, tazz, azuni and deep space orchestra.

oli furness crafts tracks designed for the floor, utilising a substantial hardware collection with old & new production techniques to create some serious raw grooves to make you party. both envy and jus fine are some of his hottest tunes to date and are real club killers. this release also offers two remixes from the ever hot urulu (needwant, dirt crew. lets play house), who turns envy into a dave clark red like tool (urulu mix 1) and into a dark techno monster (urulu mix 2). dont miss this piece of wax!

there is some disco cockiness right here. the right amount of funky with a pinch of house and many other things that well discover as we peel back the layers with ease.

having released on some of the most influential labels, it is with great honor that audio culture welcomes the montreal based artist, nautiluss, to the family. the solstice ep consists of three tracks and finds nautiluss exploring warmer, more euphoric territories, and he does it right whilst still retaining the boldness and toughness of his past work. the ep flows effortlessly from the big string euphoria on solstice to the darker tones on corvus passing the slightly off kilter shuffle on neptune. without a doubt these will heat up any dancefloor in the cold winter months ahead.

this is the first ep of aleqs notal, a boy who spent his early years in the heat and sand of saudi arabia, but then decided to take some dust with him and throw it in our ears. in love with the soulfulness of detroits style and the roughness of chicago suburbs, he comes solid with this four tracks release full of shadows and tricky rhythmic patterns.

bottin is back with his highly collectible artifact edits. this 12 is dedicated to lucio battisti (well known among disco heads for il veliero) - here bottin has reworked some lesser-known songs that take you on a horseback ride revealing the balearic side of the legendary italian songwriter. only 200 copies!

collaborations are often the fortune of timing. with andy having moved on since closing the dissident label to launching his cave paintings project to tim s departure from battant and striking out as andrew weatheralls engineer and soon to be co-member of the asphodells, an alliance was born between the two to undertake a series of live jam sessions at eachs respective studios. a love of new wave, new beat, uk bleep and detroit techno all feature in b-ultras and the aptly titled, neu beat. both cuts are heavily soaked in the pitch black, smoke machine funk and strob-laden fug of andys (and co-hort joe hart) infamous world unknown dancefloor. running at around 10 minutes the tracks are essentially an examination of acid houses ideals. clattering hats, throbbing basslines, stabbing keys and doses of 303. keeping it pretty simple but all about a pure groove on and on. backing these up is a remix of b-ultras from jamie paton that accentuates the groove and drags the acid deeper down to some b-boy dub throwdown - with more to follow from all protagonists in 2014.

sect returns to the heart of the history once more. chicagos legacy is finally represented on the label by one of the finest producers of this city and sound, dj skull. words cant do justice to the legacy of this legend of house and techno music. for almost three decades skull has produced of some of the finest dancefloor tracks ever made, be it through saber (trax), djax, hybrid, majesty recordings, tresor, or many others. here the dark knight offers four very special cuts that reaffirm his legendary status. the title track combines the most up-to-date techno production techniques with the inimitable chicago jacking sound. *promise of peace* retrieves traditional house values on the mellower end of the musical scale, while *reboot* gets back to the straight-up techno, with some nicely understated acid elements, and finally *big girls* is informed by both reggae dub and forward thinking techno.
